Do You Know Anything About GPS Collars?
I see so many lost dog posts on my local craigslist pet section. It just breaks my heart to think of how cruel it is for people to keep dogs that don’t belong to them.
I heard of this GPS collar for dogs and I was wondering if anyone knows anything about them.

They’re a battery operated device, and they’re typically quite chunky and expensive unfortunately (for good ones anyway)
They are a GPS receiver, like the one in your car, except they don’t have any maps in them. They’re also a cutdown mobile phone with GPRS or 3G internet built in.
The GPS signal is received by the device, then uploaded to a central database, allowing you to track your dog via a web page.
There’s typically a monthly service charge associated with this, which varies by provider, and your location. Also, the frequency of location updates will also vary the data used by the collar, which may increase cost if you want it updated every few seconds.
GPS receivers don’t get much signal inside, or where there’s lots of dense material, so it’s still possible for your dog to hide where it can’t get a fix. The good part though is that the website will show the dog’s last known location, so at least you can begin looking where it was last seen.

Some dogs are stolen, for Lab experiments….especially big dogs…the thieves can get good money for them.

I read a news article once from a Florida newspaper…Apparently a hunters dog just disappeared while out hunting…The dog had a GPS collar that was activated after the dog went missing…
The GPS signal lead authorities to an 18 foot gater that was killed by wildlife authorites and whn they cut open the gator, they found 3 dog collars, a human boot, and a child’s doll in the gators stomach..
I’m thinking that the GPS collar that this guy bought for his dog stopped a gator from eating God knows how may other dogs and even humans..I can’t remember where the article was published…It’s been a few years.

I actually sell one of the best ones Roameo. There are 2 different kinds the Puppod which is a smaller hand unit and the Classic which is a color screen unit. They are not bulky, the have actually revamped the collars so they are very sleek. This is real time GPS, with NO activation or monthly fees.
