Microchip GPS for dogs?
Okay, so we’re getting a dog and I was wondering how these work? How much do they cost? Do I just got to any ole Vet to have one… um put in? Do they have to undergo surgery or anything?
I’m just wondering how this works, so if anyone could inform me I would very much appreciate it.
Thanks

Micro chipping a dog is not a GPS tracking device. The only GPS device on the market now is a collar with the tracking device attached to it.
A micro chip is a tiny seed of information that has your name, address, phone number and Vets. Name & phone number in it to help locate your dog if it becomes lost so it can be returned to you. You will have to sign up for one of the micro chip companies to have this service activated once the chip is placed in the dog.
It will not act as a GPS for finding your dog.

The microchip is just that, a very tiny chip in a very small tube that gets injected under the skin. The vet will have to do it and will then probably register the chip with the company that they deal with.
Here is one thing that many people don’t know. There are many companies out there that handle the chips. It is still best to make sure that they have a collar and double check with the company you are assigned to that they have the correct information. If you go to a different country, the chip you get might not be recognized there so you would have to get another one.

Go to the HomeAgain website and it’ll give you all the information you will need…. It’s basically a little, almost microscopic chip that is inserted by syringe in between the animal’s shoulder blades. It isn’t any more painful than a vaccine may be for the dog/cat. Once it is inserted (BY YOUR VET/SHELTER), you are given a form that has the microchip # on it and you register your pet either over the phone or online. You give them all your information in case your animal gets lost. If your pet goes missing and someone picks it up, normally a vet/shelter will scan an unclaimed animal that comes in to see if the animal is chipped, and if it is lucky enough to be so, then the microchip # will come up, they will contact the company who will in turn contact you. It’s the best and safest way to get your pet back. Also, they offer accidental pet insurance so if your animal is hurt/injured while missing, they cover up to a certain amount of the cost. Home Again is your best bet!!

A micro chip usually costs around $50 plus a fee of around $10 to register the chip. The chip is injected into the dog by needle… the chip itself is the size of a grain of rice. It is placed between the shoulder blades. This chip holds a number that only your dog would have. If your dog were to come up missing and is taken to a pound or vet clinic, they automatically scan the dog with a hand held device called a microchip scanner. If micro chipped the number for your dog will appear on the scanner. They type this number into the system and it brings up your contact info… Your phone number and address. They then contact you to come pick up your dog. You can access your information for the microchip by computer so if you move you can update the info. Its really worth the cost and I have had my pets micro chipped as well:)
