GPS Tracking for Dogs?

I’m looking for some general information about what GPS systems are available – and some specific information about which system would work best for my dog.

I own a Boxer. The dog is living in the country – which means street names and such are not always going to come into play (the dog’s position may be “200 ft into the woods).

Also, the dog is indoor/outdoor, so if the system depends on a collar, I’m worried about weather, humidity, moisture and such – how much does this effect the system?

Are there collar systems and chip system? And is there any clear advantage/problems to either?

I want to find out what my dog is mixed with? He’s a boxer/pit bull mix. But is there any tests I can get done to find out what else he’s mixed with, bloodlines, etc? I realize people only do this for purebred dogs, but I still want to find out. I’m not able to know what his life was like previously to rescuing him, but I’d like to know his bloodline.
