people who have gps tracking collars for pets?

i was wondering what is the purpose of paying for a collar to tra ck your pet when the person who finds them and wants them can just take it off if they wanted your pet i have a problem with people trying to keep my dogs when they jump my fence so i was going to get them one of those collars but i was wondering how secure is it and another thing if someone gets caught with your animal and they found it and it had tags and everything will they get in trouble?
ok its not like im a bad owner but my dogs are very pretty and there pure breed pitbulls and they are girls and i have a white one with blue eyes and a chocolate one with hazel eyes and a fawn boxer and both my pits got out before on different occusions and people were trying to keep them and show them off and i caught them my dogs can club my fence and when they do get out its cause my neighbor feed stray cats and they see them and want to chase them while there outside while im letting them out to go potty i might go get the phone and come back its that quick i think people should get in trouble for that it is technically like stealing

GPS Dog Collar That Can Be Accessed From A Computer?

Does anyone know of a GPS dog tracking collar that can be accessed from a computer? I have looked at several on the internet, but all of them require a handheld unit, which would be ok, except for the fact that they are limited to line-of-sight transmission. They can only broadcast for, at most, 7 miles. I want to be able to log into my computer and see where my dog is at all times. If he runs out of the transmission range of the handheld unit, then its useless. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
Apparently I didn’t give enough details. My dog is a hound and I live in the country. He trails deer and rabbits all of the time. So at times, he can run for miles. And I’m not going to put up a fence or keep him chained in the middle of nowhere. I’m 10 miles from the nearest major highway. If you can’t provide a GPS based solution, please do not respond. Thanks.

I found a lost dog and not sure what to do! Is there a website for lost/found pets? Please no mean comments!?

This morning, what seems like the sweetest little dog showed up on our back porch step. Apparently she can climb over our fence, and come and go as she pleases.

She’s obviously a hunting hound and she resembles a beagle more than anything else.

Today I searched the neighborhood in hopes of finding the owner. I went to several houses and knocked on the door but no one I talked to was missing a dog. If the owners are searching for her, I didn’t see them. Our next door neighbors, who saw her, told me that they’ve seen her being walked on a leash in the neighborhood but couldn’t describe the people who were walking her.

I’m a bit wary of her because I don’t know her but I believe that she has an owner. I don’t know if she’s had her shots and I worry about rabies and other illnesses. She seems friendly, though. And I am not the LEAST bit afraid of dogs.

Like I said, our yard is fenced-in, so apparently she climbed the fence. I understand that hounds can do that… after all they’re bred to hunt. Like I said, she can come and go as she pleases… but she chooses to stay here.

I know that beagles and other hunting hounds have a tendency to wander and are expert trackers that can easily find their way home, but I have qualms about turning her loose. There are some really evil, nasty people out there that hate dogs, wild animals that prey on small dogs, and crazy drunk drivers who would probably run over a dog and then just drive off. So, I’ve left her in our backyard for the night. I’m not going to let her in the house because I’m worried that she might pass on a disease to our other dog (we own a large German Shepherd).

I’m not sure if some heartless owner just abandoned her, or if some heartbroken child is searching for her and missing her. I hope that they’re not gonna be upset when they find out that we’re keeping her in our yard for now, but if they are, I can’t help it. I want her to be safe while we make a good faith effort to locate her owners and like I said, to let her run loose would mean condemning her to any number of horrible fates. I have no intention of stealing her!

She doesn’t look dirty or neglected but she doesn’t have on a collar. She was looking at me expectantly when I found her and I thought she might be hungry. I drank her some water and she acted like she was dying of thirst. I filled the bowl several times and she emptied it in one gulp. I’ve given her loads of food but she still seems ravenously hungry. I worry that she might have worms, even though she doesn’t look sick. She’s like a canine vacuum cleaner.

If I can’t find the owner I’m gonna see if the animal shelter can scan her for a microchip. But, if she didn’t even have on a collar… what are the odds that the owners would have had her microchipped?

What’s really strange is her behavior. I don’t even know her and she’s become "stuck like glue" attached to me!!!! Apparently she hasn’t been abused because if she were, she probably wouldn’t trust humans. She won’t leave my side, except when I enter the house or leave the backyard. Whenever the dog sees me, she wags her tail and jumps around but whenever I walk away from her, she makes a terrible fuss!!!! The neighbors thought I was killing her because she made such a fuss when I left her alone. She cries and cries whenever I’m not there. She seems like such a sweet little dog. I’m pretty sure that she’s a fully grown dog. I’m not sure why she has become so attached to me.

I called the vet’s office this morning and they told me about an official website for lost and found pets, but they couldn’t tell me the web address. Does anyone know it?

And why has the little thing taken such a shine to me? I mean she doesn’t seem abused or neglected, aside from she was starving and dying of thirst (maybe she was just lost for a long time, her owners didn’t necessarily neglect to feed her and give her water). So why would she be sticking around a stranger when she seems to have a loving family?

I’ve noticed that animals usually do! I am a huge sucker for elderly people, animals, and small children. Especially dogs and horses.

I’m getting up early tomorrow and searching the neighborhood again. She makes that unmistakable hound noise! You’d think her owners would hear it. Or maybe something bad happened to her owner and she was trying to alert me.

I can’t keep her even if we never find her owners. I’m going to Latin America to teach English in a few months and, well, pet ownership and itinerant English teachers just don’t mix. I love animals and one day I’d like to have thousands of them, but I can’t get any more pets right now! it would be so unfair to the animals because I couldn’t provide a stable home
I’ve given her a little plastic coolwhip dish of water to drink. She’s eaten us out of house and home.
First of all, thanks to all the NICE people who were kind enough to give me advice and websites.

@ Baxter… didn’t you read my ? I’m not holding the dog hostage and I’m certainly not holding YOU hostage. My question is windy but you don’t HAVE to read it… but please don’t read stuff into it that’s not there.

    Je répeté:

The dog got into my yard on its own, and she can get out on her own, too. If she really wanted to leave, she could have left.

She may not be able to find her way home, like one poster said. There are all kinds of horrible things that can happen to a little dog wandering around lost and turning her loose would almost surely mean sending her off to die. :’( At least she’s in a safe place while we try to locate her owners.

Furthermore, she doesn’t seem to WANT to leave me. She doesn’t even try to escape, which she can easily do. She just sits on the back porch step and cries and cries, apparently for me. I don’t know what she wants.
Beth J… you are really kind and thanks so much for your thoughtful answer.

I’d love to adopt a thousand new dogs but unfortunately I can’t have any more animals right now… I’m off to Mexico or possibly South America to teach.

Unless… I can take her down to Mexico with me. I can’t keep her with me at my house down there but I DO have a friend who needs a dog. I’m not sure if he’s ready for one… his own dog died a few months ago and he’s still grieving. I’m not sure what would be involved in taking a dog across the border. But if I get stuck with this dog I’m going to ask him if he’d like her bc she needs a good loving home and this guys loves dogs.
@ curly: Thanks for your answer!! And your kind words.

I’m a sucker for animals and they seem to sense that.

Which GPS Dog tracker / Pet Locator is recommended?

I wish to adopt a deaf dog, but my fear is that she may get lost, so I would like to get her a locator that can be worn on her collar. I found one called Zoombak, but the reviews are not great. Can anyone recommend a better one? (I need one that would give me quick and constant alerts as to her position in case she got out of the house.) Thanks in advance.
Thanks for the suggestion Erica. The thing is, I already have a fence. My concern is that the dog could escape if someone accidentally left the gate open, which does happen.
