question about microchipping dogs?

My sister’s boyfriend told me his vet microchipped his puppy–not with the standard chip, but with a chip that has GPS capability. For instance, if his dog gets lost, they can "track" it and find it. Has anyone else heard of this? The only microchips I know are the ones that have to be scanned by shelters, vets, etc.

Microchip With GPS?

So some of my friends and I were talking and somehow we got on the subject of GPS microchips.

Now I know there are microchips, all of my animals have them, and I know there are GPS collars for dogs but I was pretty sure they hadn’t put the two together yet.

Now there have been a few cases of horse theft in my area and although my horse is in a good secure area it got me thinking that having a GPS in a microchip would really diminish theft and allow owners and pets a greater chance at being reunited.

So does anyone know if this will be the technology of the future? Is this something that is already in the works or will it be years down the road? Do you think the public would be receptive to this or would people worry that it would come to people next? Any thoughts?

I’m quite uneducated about this subject so I would really appreciate other peoples thoughts and ideas about it.

Thanks

Katie: They do have microchipping for horses and it’s actually pretty common. All of my horses have one and I know of many others that do too so it’s not just for the expensive show horses.

GPS chips in dogs. Is this for real?

I’ve heard a lot of rumors about there being chips for pets that not only work like the microchips for when the dog is found and taken to a vet or shelter, but will also give you their location (via your phone or computer) when they do get lost. Is this for real or wishful thinking? And, if the dog is already chipped is it impossible to get this new fangled ‘GPS chip’?
